A carmen meta-commentum for 2004
An update on the site and my comings and goings: I publish my Horace translation.
Sunday, 2004-12-19 | Classic Gin, demongin.org, Journal, Literature
School having temporarily ended, I've got some time on my hands.
You may or may not recall when I vowed (back in November) to translate some Horace and post my translations here on the old DemonGin. Regardless of your ability or willingness to recall my half-cocked,
boozy ramblings, I did so vow. Now that I've got this free time (i.e. in the weeks before I come to possess MGS3: Snake Eater), I've begun to get around to the Horace project.
Over in the Features gallery you'll find my first translation: the fifth ode of Horace's first book of odes. You might, if it's been a while, want to have your Latin dictionary handy (I certainly did while I was translating). I've put Horace's verse alongside mine and also provided a little bit of coordinating/exegetical commentary.
If this first attempt goes over well, I might be convinced to hit the Horace again--on Christmas Eve and Day, perhaps, when I've got absolutely nothing to do. Come weal or woe, however, I definitely plan to translate at least one more ode before I call it a day on translating Horace.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed undermining and impoverishing it!
[ED 2010-02-11: DemonGin "features" no longer exist, but you can find the translation (sans pedantic, obstructionist footnotes, here.)]
