Blueman Group is Like Soup
A reflection on coastal humidity and the "social hibernation" that comes with the start of a new semester.
Monday, 2004-08-30 | Classic Gin, Journal, Social Studies
The humidity remains unbearable. I've heard that it has something to do with a hurricane weather system that has been stirring up weather all along the more southern parts of the east coast.
It's incredible how humid it continues to be. For over a week the air has been thick--you might even try to cut it with a whetted edge--and just when you think it's about to rain, all that you get is a light mist that goes quickly away. The Long Island sound, I've heard, is responsible. Something about New York's main island and weather fronts. The result is this unbelievable and unending humidity. The Sound smothers us.
But enough about the weather.
Registration and Convocation are tomorrow. That means that the ride/die bender of BTFO '04 is officially officially over.
As for what's about to happen, I've heard two brands of conjecture so far. I've heard some tell it thus: they plan to master their time and engagement level in order to maintain some kind of recreational schedule. I've heard others tell it thus: they have already resigned to the fact that once this place goes on lock (i.e. the second week of class begins) that they plan to go into a kind of social hibernation. That is to say, they plan to abandon certain social, physical and emotional needs in order to concentrate more fully on their studies.
Whatever happens, shit this past week has been mad real and any sort of reprieve (i.e. responsibility to the world of the living) will be a welcome bit of succor.
For those of you following the side-quest involving me and my scanner, you may rest easily. I've replaced the
bracket-arm-bulb-dealy and I'm in business. If you're a Gin reader and you're in the area and you need something scanned and you don't mind venturing into my durance, I'll be happy to scan anything you bring by 627 Canner.
Work on The Proscriptions front has also begun to resume. Like Rintrah rising from the deep, I see what there is and what there may some day be. As of now, I plan to finish working out the details of the lyrics, the liner notes and the promotional website in the coming days. No ETA just yet.
