The Mouldering Dead

Transplanted from newathens.org

Tuesday, 2008-07-08 | On the Internet, Videogames

The following originally appeared on newathens.org (which is now a private site and therefore off limits to most people). The author is Yours Truly. The context...well, I'll leave that to be deduced:

The mouldering dead rise with the sun from the peaty heather and wander the Earth, arms outstretched, teeth bared, yellowing bone and deli meat colored sinew exposed: the air rots in sympathy and a suffocating, sweetly velvety miasma strangles flora and fauna. Young women with flat abdomens, firm haunches and taught jaw-flesh disappear from the public places and become the private property of robber barons (can we work young Thandie Newton into this movie somehow? Interview with the Vampire holler!); life is hard-scrabble and the countryside is, by all appearances, about as fertile as the surface of the Moon.

The sun never rises as high in the sky as it did yesterday and it dies earlier every evening; winter is coming on and with the decline in temperatures, the desiccated flesh of the wandering dead hardens, the creatures of the night--unnatural mixtures of man and beast come straight from some Oriental nightmare--are emboldened by the long nights and the when the sun falls, the stifling hopelessness in the foul-smelling air chills to the bone.

It is a horrible night to have a curse.
