New Tag: Cryptology
In which I explain and inaugurate the eponymous new tag.

| NSA doesn't know or control everything, as shown by public-key cryptography and the beating NSA took on key escrow and the fact that U.S. Navy submarines use Microsoft windows. |
| David Kahn |
David Kahn, who in 1967 published The Codebreakers and simultaneously became the subject of an NSA ban as well as history's first great chronicler of the history of cryptology (the study of secret writing), is one hell of a writer.
Similarly, Bruce Schneier, whose Applied Cryptography and Practical Cryptography won him enough prestige in the nerd community that I've been reading his every blog post since I first heard his name close to half a decade ago, is also a hell of a writer.
Both of these writers--security gurus, chroniclers: whatever--have a special place in my heart and imagination. Mostly, they earned this place by writing well. But, I must concede, they also earned this place by writing about cryptanalysis (the study of secret writing and the breaking of secret codes and ciphers), cryptography (the creation of codes and ciphers and the enciphering of texts) and cryptology at large.
And so, in order to encourage myself to write and read more about Cryptology, an interest I picked up (primarily) from these two great writers, I am creating a new "Cryptology" tag.
I haven't got any specific ideas for posts or content--this isn't the Zona Roja tag and it's definitely not the Rat Blog tag--but I feel like now that I've created the tag, I'll be obliged and encouraged to write in the spirit of these two great writers by writing on the favorite subject of these two great writers.
