...and We're Back on Hiatus

In which I temporarily retire again.

Flaubert's famous search for the "mot juste" was not a search for words that glow alone, but for words so precisely placed that in combination with other words, also precisely placed, they carve out a shape in space and time.

Stanley Fish

I haven't been posting lately.

I'm not depressed or anything, but I got an Xbox for Christmas (and have been making up for lost time).

I have also been spending a lot of time writing very short, declarative sentences lately. As it happens, I have graduated to higher visibility tasks at work and now spend most of my day writing bullet points.

Telamonian Ajax summarized the situation nicely in his eponymous tragedy, when, despairing at his mixed fortune, he was reduced to punning bitterly on his own name.[1]

Whom the Gods would destroy, they would first make great and, in so doing, also render inarticulate.

And so, since I haven't got much to say and can't seem to find the time to say it, I figure it is best to capitulate to reality, announce an official hiatus and bugger off for a little while. I will live to blog again, but there is no reason to expect anything from me any time soon.

  1. "Ajax", in ancient Greek, is pronounced in such a way that it sounds nearly identical to the contemporary word for "alas": for Ajax to exclaim his own name in a fit of despair is sort of like if I were to exclaim, "woe is Tim!" and the English word "woe" were pronounced "tim".
