How it Ends (2004)

Devotchka

This Denver quartet, having pulled off that most difficult of coups--the one all folk-influenced indie rock bands would do if they only had the chops--managed to skip the "best new artist" and "best band you've never heard of" articles almost entirely and, in spite of the fact that they came literally out of thin air, somehow played belle of the ball at 2005's SXSW more like a resurgent spinster than a demurring debutante. It's a testament to their befuddling charisma: that quality that Devotchka has of seeming like an old hand is as evident on this this record as it is in their SXSW success story: How it Ends sounds like an old friend right out of the gate. It's charm wears thin relatively quickly--familiarity breeds contempt--but the kids can definitely play.
